Her body, after birth — the real picture
Recovery is not "a week off then back to normal." It's slower, and weirder, than the films show.
- 6 weeks minimum for the uterus to shrink back. Lochia (bleeding) tapers across that time.
- Stitches (from a tear or episiotomy) hurt for 7-14 days. A peri bottle of warm water makes the bathroom bearable.
- C-section recovery is major abdominal surgery. No driving for ~2 weeks, no lifting anything heavier than the baby for 6 weeks.
- Breastfeeding can be painful at first. Cracked nipples, engorgement, blocked ducts. A lactation consultant is gold.
- Postnatal check at 6 weeks is for her, not the baby. Help her go. Help her ask honest questions.
Your job: spot the pain she's hiding to look strong. Then act on it.
